Your Feedback Requested on Marine Protected Area Management Priorities

cover of the Decadal Management ReviewThe California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) are seeking feedback on the prioritization of recommendations from the first comprehensive Decadal Management Review of California’s Marine Protected Area Network and Management Program.

After the January 2023 release of the Review, the Commission requested that CDFW analyze and consider all comments and information received to help streamline and set timeframes for tackling the 28 recommendations in the Review. Several hundred comments were received from more than 100 diverse entities and individuals, including California Native American Tribes, government agencies, NGOs, the fishing community, marine protected area researchers, and members of the public.

While all 28 recommendations in the Review remain important, recommendations were prioritized based on identified need, expected timeframe, input received, and level of information and resources that are available to advance the recommendations. This approach will help focus the work of CDFW, the Commission, the California Ocean Protection Council, Tribes, and partners, who will implement the recommendations to achieve near-term, mid-term, and long-term priorities. The draft prioritized action list is available on the CDFW website.

The Commission is seeking public feedback on the draft prioritized action list to inform their Marine Resources Committee discussion during the July 20, 2023 Committee meeting. To be included in the July meeting materials, written comments must be submitted to the Commission by 5 p.m. on July 7. The Commission website includes instructions for how to submit written comments and a schedule of upcoming Commission meetings.
